Worked example
17 nmol/L (middle of the reference range) = 4.3 ng/mL
Conversion formulas
| ng/mL | ng/mL = nmol/L × 0.2532 | nmol/L = ng/mL × 3.949 |
|---|---|---|
| µg/dL | µg/dL = nmol/L × 0.02532 | nmol/L = µg/dL × 39.49 |
| ng/dL | ng/dL = nmol/L × 25.32 | nmol/L = ng/dL × 0.03949 |
| ng/L | ng/L = nmol/L × 253.2 | nmol/L = ng/L × 0.003949 |
Good to know
Neopterin in cerebrospinal fluid is a marker of immune activation. It is reported in nmol/L or in ng/mL (= µg/L).
- ng/mL × 3.95 = nmol/L (exact factor 3.949).
- Published upper limits differ (about 20-34 nmol/L), and a higher decision threshold of 61 nmol/L has been proposed for children; both are shown in the source note.
Reference range

| nmol/L | 0 – 34 |
| µg/dL | 0 – 0.8609 |
| ng/dL | 0 – 860.9 |
| ng/L | 0 – 8609 |

Note from the source: Upper limit of the reference interval 34 nmol/L; published limits are mostly 20-34 nmol/L (another laboratory: 2.3-7.6 µg/L, about 9-30 nmol/L). The same study proposed 61 nmol/L as a decision threshold to separate inflammatory from non-inflammatory CNS disease in children. 1 ng/mL = 3.95 nmol/L
